Classic Macaroni and Cheese

This is a recipe for mac and cheese purists. A classic white sauce, Wisconsin sharp cheddar cheese and toasted bread crumbs – sometimes simple is best.

Heat oven to 375°F.

Cook macaroni according to package instructions until al dente; drain. Meanwhile, sauté onion in butter until crisp-tender. Reduce heat to medium-low. Whisk in flour until combined. Gradually whisk in milk, salt and white pepper. Bring to boil; cook and whisk for 2 minutes or until thickened. Reduce heat to low; gradually stir in 2 1/2 cups cheddar until melted.  Stir in macaroni, mustard and hot pepper sauce. Remove from the heat.

Transfer macaroni mixture to a greased 9-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar and bread crumbs. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until topping is golden brown.


Recipe Tip:
Any brand of Wisconsin sharp cheddar cheese can be used.
