Established in the spring of 2000 through the merger between the Danish MD Foods and the Swedish Arla, Arla Foods, Inc. is a co-operative owned by more than 13,400 farmers in Northern Europe. Headquartered in Denmark, Arla Foods has production in 13 countries and its products are sold in over 100 countries around the globe. In 1998, Arla Foods started manufacture of high quality Havarti cheese in Wisconsin at Hollandtown Dairy by cheese experts using Danish know-how. Today, Hollandtown dairy produces a variety of cheese types and flavors using the high quality standards and specifications of the original European recipes.

Duane began his career in a small cheese factory at the age of 14 as a way to save money for college. Eventually, he earned a degree in civil engineering but cheesemaking kept calling him back. He's now among Wisconsin's elite Master Cheesemakers, having earned certification in 2002 for gouda and edam, varieties he produces for Arla Foods USA, and graduating again this year as a Master in Havarti. "The Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker® program gives you a better understanding of the cheesemaking process," he says. "It is about making a better product for your customers and it has helped me to accomplish that."
