Margherita Mac and Cheese

The popular flavors of classic Margherita Pizza – fresh basil, tomatoes and lots of gooey mozzarella cheese – combine with macaroni for a delicious family-friendly meal any day of the week.

Heat oven to 375°F.

Cook macaroni according to package directions until al dente; drain. Transfer to a large bowl. Stir in tomatoes and basil.

Heat olive oil in heavy, large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add garlic; cook and stir for 1 minute.  Whisk in flour until combined. Gradually whisk in milk, salt and pepper. Bring to boil; cook and whisk for 2 minutes or until thickened. Pour white sauce over macaroni mixture; toss to coat.

Transfer half of the macaroni mixture to a greased 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with half of the mozzarella. Repeat layers. Bake, covered, for 30 minutes. Uncover, bake 10-15 minutes longer or until sauce is bubbly.

Garnish with basil.
